This one was especially close to my heart.
Photographing my mom, Velda, is something I’ve had the honor of doing many times over the years, but this session was different. It was part of the Empowered Mama Collection, yes, but it was also something more personal: a chance to reflect with her on her inner strength and confidence.
When she stepped into the studio, the energy shifted. There was warmth, laughter, some quiet nerves, and that little spark I’ve come to recognize in her over the years, the one that shows up when she’s doing something brave.
“It was amazing,” she told me afterward her eyes bright with emotion. “I just felt so pampered. It brought out an element in me that I know is in there… but it’s hard for me to actually reach that point. Today, I think I got a little bit closer.”
And when she saw the images? “It just brought tears to my eyes,” she said. “I saw a whole different perspective of who I am.”
Velda at 64 years old has raised 11 children, become a grandmother 14 times over, and is recently standing on her own after four decades of marriage. She’s been through a lot. She’s known joy and sacrifice, resilience and reinvention. And what moved me most during our conversation wasn’t just her wisdom, but the pride she felt in honoring her own needs, especially in a new season of life.
That knowing—that confidence—is exactly what she’s bringing into her next chapter.
After years of pouring into everyone else, Velda made a bold decision to stand up for herself and build something of her own. She recently launched a wellness business rooted in helping others take back their health, reclaim their joy, and feel empowered in their bodies again.
“The thing I’m most proud of,” she told me, “is that I made the decision to stand up for myself and what my needs are. Not necessarily for the children anymore—but just being confident that there is something better for me. Making those boundaries and standing on that.”
We honored that in this session, too—capturing a set of personal branding portraits that reflect her passion, warmth, and new sense of purpose. Photos that show her not just as a mama or grandma, but as a businesswoman stepping into her power.
As we talked about what it means to be an empowered mama, her answer came with steady clarity: “It’s knowing we may not always have the answers, but we figure it out. Even if it’s messy. And we can be confident in that process. We bring exactly what we need to the table. We are the ones meant to do it. Equipped to do it. Capable of doing it.”
Her advice to other moms? Simple and powerful: “Just know that you have inside of you what it takes to handle anything that comes your way. And don’t doubt yourself.”
This session was a reminder—for both of us—that beauty is not about performance. Power doesn’t always shout. And sometimes, the most transformational thing we can do is allow ourselves to be seen.
